Keywords Tracking Guide
Learn how to use SourceRank's keyword tracking to monitor how AI engines respond to queries about your brand, products, and industry.
What is Keyword Tracking?
Keyword tracking lets you monitor specific search queries and brand terms across AI engines. When someone asks ChatGPT about “best project management software” or “Acme Company reviews,” keyword tracking shows if and how you’re mentioned.
This feature is available on Standard and Professional plans.
Why Keywords Matter for AEO
Unlike SEO where you optimize for ranking position, AEO success depends on being mentioned and cited when relevant queries are asked. Keywords help you:
- Track brand mentions - Know when AI talks about you
- Monitor competitors - See who gets cited in your space
- Find opportunities - Discover queries where you should appear but don’t
- Measure progress - Track improvement over time
Adding Keywords
Step 1: Navigate to AI Visibility
From your dashboard, click on a domain card to open the AI Visibility page.
Step 2: Find the Keywords Section
Scroll to the “Tracked Keywords” section and click Add Keyword.
Step 3: Enter Your Keyword

Keyword Best Practices
Do’s
- Be specific - “enterprise project management software” beats “software”
- Think like customers - What would they ask an AI?
- Include brand terms - Track your company name variations
- Mix categories - Combine brand, category, and question keywords
- Update regularly - Add new keywords as your business evolves
Don’ts
- Avoid single words - Too broad, too many irrelevant results
- Skip generic terms - “best software” won’t give useful data
- Don’t duplicate - Similar keywords waste your quota
- Avoid jargon - Use terms customers actually use
Reading Keyword Results
Mention Rate
Shows what percentage of AI checks for this keyword resulted in a mention of your brand.
- High (70%+): Strong presence for this query
- Medium (30-70%): Room for improvement
- Low (<30%): Significant opportunity to improve
Sentiment by Keyword

- Gap keywords - Important queries where you’re not mentioned
Troubleshooting
”No data for keyword”
The keyword may be too specific or unusual. Try:
- Broader variations
- More common phrasing
- Removing brand modifiers temporarily
Mentions inconsistent across checks
AI engines don’t always give the same answer. Variation is normal. Look at trends over multiple checks rather than individual results.
